Conversations With Marva: Sunday’s Thoughts: Church?

  • Danielle · 2 years ago
My grandmother and her sisters and brothers were and are SERIOUS church goers. I have NEVER been comfortable in the church because I never believed in the Middle Man. I have always thought that my relationship w/God was a private and personal one and that opinion has not changed. The Black Church has a lot of issues of hypocrisy and it seems to be more prevalent and out in the open now than ever before. Maybe that's a good thing because it can be fixed.

I know that we are all human and imperfect, but I simply can't place my soul in the hands of individuals that can be back biting, spiteful, inolerant of those who are different and who close ranks and keep secrets about the misogyny and homophobia that is rampant in so many of our places of worship. Like you, maybe oen day I will go back to church, but it's not going to be anytime soon.

I was inspired by you and so many others to create my own site. Drop by when you can. :-)

I used to feel guilty; I don't anymore...mainly because of the reasons that you have listed in your comment...I have very open views on a lot of things and I believe in God; I don't believe that He created us to judge others, I don't believe He created us to gather together to decide what's right and what's wrong...the Black church does have a lot of hypocrisy and I did get tired of the jealousy, the gossip, the backstabbing, the politics...it was downright crazy!

I'm glad to know that I'm not alone...

I will definitely drop by! You've got a definite blog fan in me, and I haven't even seen it yet!

This is a good post. Does church figure much in black people's lives? Is religion that important? Who knows. I go when I feel like I need direction but I don't go much.

By the way, LOVE ur banner!

The traditions of church is lost on me. My parents are Catholic and I never confirmed - by choice.

The sense of community in many churches can be found in real life as well, without the hypocrisy.

Thanks Aulelia for the compliment...yes, church plays a big part in black people's lives...at least it used to...I think a lot of Black folks get lost in religion, instead of connecting with their spirituality and that is where the hypocrisy and all of the problems in the Black church come in. That's my opinion...

I agree, Cooper that the sense of community can be found in real life and doesn't necessarily need to be captured at church...that's why I no longer feel so guilty about not going. I get my spiritual connections from people at work, from people at the grocery store, from conversations in restaurants, from everywhere.

Thanks to you both for your comments!
